Disha organised a district-level media workshop focusing on violence against women and gender equality at its Training Centre. The event brought together nearly 50 journalists and voluntary workers who actively participated in discussions and reflections.
Senior journalist and social activist Bharat Dogra, who chaired the programme, stressed the importance of strengthening media’s role in addressing women’s issues. He pointed out that while the government has enacted several laws for women’s welfare, awareness is key to ensuring their benefits reach communities. He also urged collective action against social evils such as substance abuse, dowry and extravagant wedding expenses, suggesting the formation of small village committees to tackle these challenges.
Veteran journalist Shahid Zuberi underlined that violence against women must be eliminated across all sections of society. He called for media to play a proactive role in ending discrimination and fostering peace and harmony. Other senior journalists, including Shyam Kumar Saini and Dheeraj Chaudhary, appealed for greater focus on women’s education and empowerment.
Founder Director KN Tiwari highlighted that Disha has been working on women’s rights and gender equality for over four decades. He emphasised the crucial role of media in amplifying women’s voices and shaping public opinion.
Coordinator Jahnavi Tiwari reiterated the need to raise awareness about existing laws and emphasised the importance of social and economic empowerment for women. Rehana Adeeb from Astitva Sanstha also shared her perspectives on women’s rights.
The workshop saw active contributions from journalists such as Sudhir Sohel, Rajesh Pal, Dharmendra Anmol, Rakesh Thakur and Dr Vimal Sharma, along with Disha staff.
