Broom-Making Training for Rural Women

Rural women in Khanampur Kasauli village in Haridwar district are turning skills into livelihoods, thanks to a broom-making training programme organised from 3 to 8 September 2025 under the Aarohan Project. Conducted by the trainer Gulnazar from Bahadarabad, the workshop focused on equipping women with techniques to produce two types of household brooms — the nariyal broom (seenk jhadoo) and the grass broom (phool jhadoo).

The six-day training was structured in two parts. During the first two days, participants learnt the process of sorting nariyal sticks into different sizes and went on to prepare three broom varieties, including muttha nariyal brooms, plastic rope and wire-tied brooms, and ring-tied brooms.

Next three days concentrated on grass broom-making, where women sorted and processed grass into long, medium and short sizes to produce plastic-pipe and plastic-rope brooms. Bamboo sticks were added for durability and grip, ensuring sturdier products.

By the final day, the women had become confident in preparing multiple broom types. Their enthusiasm and determination reflected a strong willingness to adopt broom-making as an additional income source to support their families.
